Baskets Out of the Attic Discovery and Documentation Event March 26, 9:00 - 3:00 Warner Town Hall
Bring an old basket to learn about it from the experts on Native American and Black American basket makers.
Sponsored by the Warner Historical Society, the Hopkinton Historical Society and the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum $5.00 per basket Rebecca Courser 456-2437
Do you have old baskets tucked away in your attic or closets? If you know their history, or are curious to find out more about them, please join us on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the Warner (NH) Town Hall for “Baskets Out of the Attic,” a day-long event where experts will be on hand to tell you more about your baskets and complete a documentation form, including a photo. Attendees are encouraged to bring their entire basket collection to the event.
Experts will select a maximum of three baskets per person to evaluate at a cost of $5.00 per basket. Monetary appraisals will not be given. Organizers of the event hope to educate individuals about the historical and cultural value of their baskets and to document local examples. “Many people are unaware of the number of Native American and African American basketmakers living in New Hampshire in the 19th-century, or that many examples of their work still exist today,” according to Heather Mitchell, executive director of Hopkinton Historical Society and one of the event organizers. “We hope this event will not only uncover more of these baskets, but also get people interested in history.”
Providing expertise for “Baskets Out of the Attic” will be Gaby Pelletier, scholar on northeastern Native American baskets and traditions; and Chris Bullock of The Wandering Bull LLC, authority on contemporary American Indian crafts.
In conjunction with “Baskets Out of the Attic,” Gaby Pelletier will present a program, “The History of Indigenous Containers among Wabanaki People,” on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 7:00 pm at the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum located in Warner, NH. The program is free and open to the public.
“Baskets Out of the Attic” is organized by the Hopkinton Historical Society (HHS), the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum (MKIM), the Warner Historical Society (WHS), and Wijokadoak, Inc. as a precursor to the 2011 summer exhibits, “Along the Basket Trail” that will be held at HHS, MKIM, and WHS. The exhibits, which will open on May 1 and remain on display through the summer, will also include a series of speakers and hands-on programs at each organization. “Baskets Out of the Attic” will take place from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm at the Warner Town Hall, located at 5 East Main Street in Warner, NH.

Rebecca Courser 456-2437
Please join us to escape the mid-winter cabin fever blues at the Warner Town Hall at 7:00 p.m. on February 25 for an exciting program, Escape from Sing-Sing, Captured in Warner, How Did that Happen? How did two escapees from Sing Sing terrorize New England over a period of several days? They stole cars, held up clerks, lied, were shot at and were always a few steps ahead of a New England-wide man hunt! And then they were captured in Warner! Fascinating - Don't miss it!
